From the Pastor´s Desk
Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves. (Eph 5:19)
Dear friends and members of the Balboa Union Church
As children we learned how important it is to practice hygiene. We wash our hands several times a day, we brush our teeth. That’s part of our lifestyle that we do no longer think about it. We don´t question the need of personal hygiene. However, allow me to ask: Is this really enough? Well, I don´t want to promote excessive hygiene. I just want to ask what we are used to do for our soul-spiritual life. Each day we face so many images. Each day we get so many news. Some messages and pictures are just awful. Of course it won´t be a solution to put down the newspaper and to turn off the television. But what are we doing for our spiritual health? Do we need something like a spiritual hygiene?
At this point I remember a recommendation of Martin Luther. Facing depressive or hard moments he had said: “We cannot forbid that black birds fly over our heads. But we can prevent that they building a nest in our head and mind.”
Good music, cheerful moments, worshipping together, a short prayer – these are things which are important for our inner balance. Just as we won´t miss washing our hands, these things also belong to our mental hygiene. Let us encourage each other; this is an important duty among Christians.
Kind Regards
Reverend Roland
