From the Pastor’s Desk
And God said to Noah and to his sons:
“Behold, I set my covenant with you and with your descendants. … Henceforth shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.”
Genesis 9
Anthropologists have collected several stories of the Flood. Many ethnic groups are familiar with such stories. There are no historical data but mythologies. But by the fact that a flood was not happening, this story is not false. It is about deeper things. It touches also a typical fear of all humans. Again and again we see disasters. We don´t have an answer and see that our human forces are limited.
What is the message of the Bible on these topics? The reason for the flood according to the Bible was “the wickedness of the people”. At this point, the Bible is unique. I do not know whether other flood stories specify this reason: “the wickedness of the people”? Here, the Bible shows that we are accountable for our actions.
This expression “the wickedness of the people” seems to bother us. Today we prefer another word: corruption. This is still a very current issue. I can understand that some people recommend even violence to combat corruption.
But this is the next message of the Bible. The Flood was indeed the use of force. God destroyed the wicked mankind. Did now the world become better? No. In this sense, the story of the Flood God ended negative. Nothing has been achieved by the destruction.
It is good to know that these are not historical facts. But we are reminded that any attempt to use force to achieve the good will fail.
God took a different path to bring us salvation. Join us in this Lenten time Jesus on his way to Jerusalem. Here we find the strength to resist evil.
