Today’s verse & prayer<\/h1>\n

James 1: 12\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Whether we like it or not, trials are a part of daily life – the Bible never speaks about \u00abif we suffer temptation\u00bb it says \u00abwhen we suffer temptation\u00bb. \u00a0Without a doubt, we are going to have trials, and we will need to persevere. \u00a0Temptation comes in many forms: whether it be re-shaping the truth, \u00abborrowing\u00bb something from someone which we intend to return, taking advantage of a situation, \u00absharing\u00bb the details of another person’s life that isn’t ours to speak about, holding a grudge, or feeling superior to someone else. \u00a0What’s worse, when we are tired, we are more prone to fall!<\/div>\n

Several years ago, a popular Christian magazine conducted a survey of its readers, asking them to rank the areas of greatest spiritual challenge. Here are the top 5:<\/div>\n
    \n
  1. materialism,<\/li>\n
  2. pride,<\/li>\n
  3. self-centeredness,<\/li>\n
  4. laziness, and<\/li>\n
  5. (tie) anger\/bitterness and sexual lust.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    How many on this list can you relate to? \u00a0\u00a0Many people wrongly conclude that times of stress somehow justify ungodly responses. We are tempted to strike out or strike back, to feel resentment, or to respond in other ways that are harmful to us or to others.<\/p>\n

    Depending on which version of the Bible you read this verse in, it may sound like God is sending us the temptation and testing. \u00a0James is not saying that God tests us, but his assumption is God allows trials and temptations, and it is those trials and temptations that test us. But these are the moments to stand firm and live according to how we say others should live.<\/p>\n

    Each day we need to take moments, first thing in the morning, on our way home from work, before we go to sleep, to remind ourselves of the blessings that God has given us, including the strength to withstand.<\/p>\n

    Today we pray that God will give each of us the strength to withstand and hold fast for the prize that God has for us, for showing love in all circumstances.<\/p>\n

    Up-coming BUC Activities<\/h1>\n

    Council meeting-<\/strong> Saturday-November 14th 1:00 pm BUC\u00a0Office. This will be a meeting of Missions, Property &Management, Christian Education, Worship & Ministry, Membership committee chairs and other council members. \u00a0But all members of the congregation may sit in on the meetings and deliberations. If you have any issues you\u00a0would like the council to consider, these should be present to the Council Secretary before the meeting, so that they\u00a0can be included in the agenda.<\/p>\n

    \"ELDERLY<\/a>Visit to\u00a0Fundaci\u00f3n Nueva Vida\u00a0<\/strong>– We have programmed our next visit for the 3rd Sunday of November, which is the 15th of November. \u00a0We would love for you to join us!<\/p>\n

    Jairo Pertuz-Suarez is a renown reporter in Panama, who is now retired and lives in the Balboa community. \u00a0He has invited members of Balboa Union Church, as part of the community, to attend his book launch on November 11th. \u00a0This will be at Paitilla Inn, and all are welcome.<\/p>\n

    The event and the book are in Spanish, \u00a0but he would be thrilled to have the support of members and friends of the Church for this special event.<\/p>\n

    Thanksgiving Invitation from Our Friends of AVACA<\/h4>\n

    \"AVACA\"<\/a><\/p>\n

    AVACA, the Asociation of friends and neighbours in Casco Viejo invites us to join them for their Thanksgiving celebrations on Thursday, the 26th of November (Thanksgiving day). \u00a0They are holding a potluck, and ask everyone to bring starters, salads, side dishes and desert – or make a donation (if you don’t have time to cook).<\/p>\n

    They have organised a Kid’s Corner, so it is meant to be a family evening.<\/p>\n

    Sunday, November 15, at 6.00 p.m. in the \u00abNuevo Auditorio del Instituto Episcopal\u00bb in Parque Lefebre, the group GHarmony, who have performed a number of times at Balba Union Church are giving a concert to raise frunds for \u00abCentro Femenino de Rehabilitaci\u00f2n\u00bb. \u00a0A donation of $20.00 per person is requested, which includes a copy of their CD.<\/p>\n
