FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

The Pharisees noticed that some of Jesus’ disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hand, observing the tradition of the elders. – Mark 7:2-3

Dear friends and members of our Balboa Union Church,

What trifle!

We may ask how can people argue about something as shallow as hand-washing. On the other hand – how many times do we quarrel about trifle? When we argue, is it always worth it?
Unwashed hands – today we know how important hygiene is. But it is about more than mere hygiene. Behind this item the question of tradition shows up. That is part of our nature and our identity. That is why often trivial things are considered very important.
But there is another thing which we find difficult. Let’s take the hands-washing as an example. We see its importance. But if a person forgot, we would not start a fight about it.

But the question is if there exists only hygiene for our hands and our bodies? What about the hygiene for our soul, for our spiritual life? Let us ask ourselves: What images do we see? What kind of movies and entertainment do we watch? Is on that point our hygiene as good as when we wash our hands? Can we sometimes just turn off a movie? Are the “Messages” on our what’s-up really so important? – Jesus doesn’t want to forbid us anything, but he wants that our lives get the right quality.

Kind Regards
Reverend Roland
